Statement of personal philosophy
Who am I? What do I want? How do I express that?
In my role as a Commerce professor, I tell my students that studying business helps you become a better person, ready for the right action. I get asked about the seeming gulf between my degrees in Religious Studies and Japanese Buddhist Studies in contrast with my later doctorate from the Faculty of Management at a School of Business. But for me these things are naturally interlinked and deeply related. From a practical standpoint, intercultural history studies are useful for all of us in a business context. Language training, too, is a necessary positive. The excellent management training I received at Hyatt was all about functioning well, becoming a better person. From another angle, my journey in Japan began by learning how to meditate and doing my first monastic training on Mt. Hiei at the northeast of Kyoto when I was 20 years old. As it happens, the questions Who am I? What do I want? How do I express that? are fundamental questions, directly relevant in most life and business contexts. Further, the benefits of mindfulness are widely accepted today for health and well-being. Of course, the potential goes much deeper. Training, learning, openness. I believe in the fullness of now. Ready for the right action. Wherever you find yourself, you can be prepared for that great moment of opportunity. As the poet David Whyte says, everything, everything, everything is waiting for you.
